/>"American High" may go the way of "Freaks and Geeks," another acclaimed high school drama that couldn't pull the necessary ratings to hold its own in a competitive lineup.

FOX has canceled the series from Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker R.J. Cutler (above). The show, which follows 14 students through a year at the Chicago-area Highland Park High School, had the misfortune to air Wednesdays opposite CBS' most popular night of "Big Brother." Debuting August 2 to a 2.9 household rating/5 share at 9 p.m. and a 2.7/5 at 9:30, the show earned a 2.7/4 and 2.8/4 respectively in metered-market ratings the following week.

"We're all incredibly disappointed that FOX is pulling the show," Cutler told Zap2it.com. "I can't help but believe that if we were not up against 'Big Brother' (with a 40-share lead-in from 'Survivor') that we would have done wonderfully."

"We just needed to be seen by more people," Cutler continued. "But we're all incredibly proud of what we've accomplished and are certain we'll find a home elsewhere, just as 'Freaks and Geeks' did (on the Fox Family Channel). The phones have already been ringing with offers of possible new homes and we can't wait to announce where our fans will be able to see the show."

On Wednesday, Aug. 16, FOX will air back-to-back episodes of "Futurama" in "American's" spot. The show wasn't scheduled to air Aug. 23rd and the network has not decided what will run in its place Aug. 30.
