Anderson Cooper, whose sly, tongue-in-cheek lead-ins to stories about The Walt Disney Co. made him a favorite of late night news audiences, has left ABC News to host "The Mole," the new reality series in production for ABC's 2001 primetime schedule.

"Mole" starts with 10 contestants, one of whom is secretly a saboteur working against the others as they are tested mentally and physically. Each of the nine shows will end with a quiz, and the person who knows least about the identity of the mole will be ejected from the competition -- which will eventually come down to one winner, one loser and the revealed mole.

Cooper was the anchor of "World News Now" and a contributor to "20/20 Downtown" and "World News Tonight" until last month. The son of fabled heiress Gloria Vanderbilt, Cooper came to ABC News after three years as a reporter and producer at Channel One News. Rather than become a general assignment correspondents at ABC News' when "20/20 Downtown" leaves the Monday night lineup in the winter, Cooper opted to work on "Mole," a job that will leave him time to also write and work on documentaries.
