'The Mole' Returns to ABC This Summer Fans of "The Mole II: The Next Betrayal" will finally get to see who the spy in question is this summer.
The series, which was yanked because of low ratings last fall, is one of several original programming efforts the network is making this summer in an effort to keep viewers from straying too far before the 2002-03 season begins. ABC says it will devote about 45 percent of its prime-time slate this summer to new programming, which is comparable to what counterparts CBS and NBC are planning. The Alphabet net's mix includes several short-run series produced by ABC News, documentary series set in hospitals and the Hamptons and a new dating show. Movie premieres and sporting events will also help fill the schedule.
"The Mole II," hosted by Anderson Cooper, lasted only three weeks last fall, when it aired on Friday nights. Its low ratings were part of a general slump for reality shows, but the genre seems to be recovering based on the success of ABC's "The Bachelor" and CBS' "Survivor: Marquesas." ABC will start at the beginning, running all 13 episodes of "Mole II."
The network is also producing "The Hamptons," a four-hour "reality miniseries" about the posh Long Island summer destination, set for June 2 and 3; "Houston Medical," a six-part documentary series about the lives of doctors, nurses and patients at a Houston Hospital; and "The Diary Affairs," a dating show in which a pre-written diary determines the course of a relationship between two strangers. Also on tap is "Widows," a four-hour limited series based on a 1983 British miniseries. Mercedes Ruehl, Rosie Perez, Brooke Shields star as three women whose husbands are killed during an attempted art robbery. They come together to find the killer and pull off the heist. ABC News is contributing several limited-run series to the summer slate. They include "ICU: Arkansas Children's Hospital," about the members of a pediatric heart-transplant unit; "Boston 24/7," which goes behind the scenes of Boston's city government; and "State Vs." a courtroom series that explores cases from various viewpoints, including that of jurors. "In Search of America," a companion series to the Peter Jennings-Todd Brewster book examining what it means to be American in the 21st century, is also set for the summer. Related Shows
