King of Pop Makes CBS King of Week

In a week of reruns, specials and holiday programming. venerable CBS newsmagazine "60 Minutes" rose to the top of the ratings chart. Bolstered by an interview with troubled pop star Michael Jackson, "60 Minutes" helped push CBS to a solid victory for the week ending Sunday, Dec. 28.

Overall, CBS averaged a 6.2 rating/11 share. ABC was back in second with a 5.1/9, dropping NBC to third at 4.7/9. FOX claimed fourth at 3.7/7, beating The WB's 1.8/3 and UPN's 1.7/3.

Among adults 18-49, ABC moved into the lead, scoring a 2.8 rating among the coveted demographic. CBS fell to second at 2.6, while NBC and FOX tied with a 2.5 rating. The WB and UPN tied as well, taking the same 1.0 rating.

The Ed Bradley interview, in which the singer denied allegations of child molestation, drew a 12.0/20 to pace the weekly Top 20 for CBS. The newsmagazine was the anchor for a Sunday lineup that also included the week's No. 2 (NFL postgame coverage pulling an 11.7/21) and No. 11 (the film "One True Thing" with a 7.1/12) programs.

The network's entire Monday roster made the Top 20 for the week, starting with "Still Standing" (6.2/10, 16th) and "Yes, Dear" (6.5/11, 14th) and continuing through regular weekly powers "Everybody Loves Raymond" (8.4/13, 5th), "Two & a Half Men" (8.0/13, 7th) and "CSI: Miami" (9.0/15, 4th).

Even with many households celebrating on Christmas, CBS also got respectable performances out of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and "Without a Trace," which tied for No. 9 at 7.5/15.

Also making the Top 20 for CBS was the annual telecast of the Kennedy Center Honors, which was No. 12 with a 7.0/13.

ABC was paced by "Monday Night Football," as the week's emotional game between the Packers and Raiders scored an 11.1/19 for No. 3 on the week (the show's seven-minute pregame was No. 5 with an 8.4/14). The network also got decent numbers out of "8 Simple Rules" (6.0/11) and the first part of the "Dreamkeeper" miniseries (6.0/10), which tied for No. 17.

Tops for the week on NBC was "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," which had a 7.7/14 for No. 8, followed by "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," at No. 13 with a 6.6/11. "Dateline NBC" tied for No. 14 with a 6.5/11 and "Fear Factor" was No. 19 at 5.9/10.

The final episode of "Boomtown" just missed out on the Top 20, with a 5.7/10 for No. 21.

Over on FOX, the week's highest rated program was the Sunday NFL overrun, which had a 5.9/11 for a No. 19 tie. Leading the way for UPN was "WWE Smackdown!" in a No. 76 tie at 3.0/6, while "Reba" led The WB with a 2.3/4.
