'Idol' Studdard Accuses Ex-Manager of Identity Theft There can be only one Velvet Teddy Bear.Second season "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard isn't obsessed with "Highlander," but he is concerned about his ex-manager stealing his identity. The 26-year-old singer has filed a complaint with the Birmingham police department on Monday, June 27, accusing Ronald W. Edwards of identity theft and forgery.According to the AP, Edwards allegedly gave himself power of attorney over Studdard by forging paperwork sometime between Aug. 1, 2003 and Nov. 30, 2004.The report filed says Edwards used the singer's credit cards to take $105,000 and had written checks for $150,000. In addition, the report claims $22,000 in checks were stolen and deposited in Edwards' account. In February, Studdard sued the ex-manager and his marketing company, SEZ Inc., for allegedly misusing more than $246,000 of Studdard's money.Edwards -- who filed for bankruptcy on June 17 -- denies any wrongdoing, instead claiming that the singer owes him money. Studdard's attorney Vic Hayslip sees Edwards' filing for Chapter 7 as a tactic to avoid giving a deposition in the lawsuit, an allegation that Edwards' attorney, Glennon Threatt, says is inaccurate.Although Studdard's first solo album, "Soulful," debuted at No. 1 in December 2003, he hasn't had an easy time of it. He's struggled with various diets and exercise regimens to control his post-"Idol" weight gain, and in November 2004 -- around the time his follow-up album "I Need an Angel" was released -- he checked into a hospital for exhaustion.Nowadays, Mr. 205, the only male winner of "American Idol," makes appearances in various cities, next performing in Plymouth, Mass., on Saturday, Aug. 6.
