Golden Globe and Emmy winner Tom Selleck will make a somewhat rare TV guest appearance later this season in an episode of ABC's "Boston Legal."

The former "Magnum, P.I." star hasn't exactly shunned TV work in recent years, but he's primarily taken lead roles in movies like CBS' "Stone Cold" and A&E's "Ike: Countdown to D-Day." His last guest spot on a series came in 2000, when he put in a final appearance as Monica's (Courteney Cox Arquette) former flame Richard on "Friends" (he earned an Emmy nomination for the part that year).

On "Boston Legal," Selleck will play a character named Ivan Tiggs, the ex-husband of lawyer Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen). The "eccentric, self-assured" Ivan comes to Boston to ask Shirley to be the best man at his wedding -- despite the fact that he still has feelings for her.

An airdate for Selleck's episode hasn't been set.

Selleck earned five consecutive Emmy nominations while starring in "Magnum, P.I.," winning the award for outstanding lead actor in a drama in 1984. He won a Golden Globe for the role the following year.

His recent credits include CBS' "Reversible Errors" and the TNT westerns "Crossfire Trail" and "Monte Walsh." He's set to reprise his "Stone Cold" role as small-town police chief Jesse Stone in two more films for CBS later this season.
