ABC has made another early commitment for next season, picking up another year of its highest-rated unscripted show, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."

The announcement Thursday (April 7) doesn't come as a very big surprise, given the way the show has taken off this season. "Home Edition," along with "Desperate Housewives," has turned ABC's fortunes around on Sunday nights and helped lead the network's ratings revival this season.

The show joins "Housewives," "Lost," "Boston Legal" and "Alias," all of which were picked up earlier this week, as sure things for the network's 2005-06 schedule.

"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" has taken off in its second season, drawing 15.9 million viewers per week and a very healthy 6.5 rating among adults 18-49, the demographic most favored by advertisers. The series, in which a team of designers and builders led by Ty Pennington knocks down and rebuilds the home of a deserving family in a week's time, is a popular family show as well, drawing strong ratings among kids and teenagers.

Its audience has grown by nearly 5 million viewers over last season, when it debuted as a midseason replacement, and by 51 percent in adults 18-49 -- the biggest gains for any unscripted series this year.

The network is mum on whether the "Home Edition" spinoff "How'd They Do That?" will return as well. The Monday-night show, which explains how the previous night's renovation was accomplished, is averaging only 8.6 million viewers.
