"The Daily Show" will welcome its first* ever musical guest later this year when the White Stripes bring their bluesy garage stomp to the show.

Jack and Meg White are scheduled to appear on the show Dec. 1. It's a bit of a departure for the fake-news show, which is as likely to feature serious authors and political pundits as its in-studio guests as celebrities with projects to plug.

"We've never had a musical performance on the show before," host Jon Stewart says. "Not because we haven't wanted one -- but because we were holding out for a reunited Spandau Ballet. This will have to suffice."

Now, about that asterisk: The White Stripes are the first band to appear on a regular broadcast of the show, which has been on the air since 1996. They Might Be Giants played on a December 1999 special called "The Greatest Millennium," which the show's producers don't count as part of its regular run.

Last month, "The Daily Show" won its third straight Emmy for outstanding variety, music or comedy series. The show has also won Emmys for writing at each of the past three ceremonies.
